From Erasure to Empowerment: An Augmented Reality Experience Challenging the Silencing of Women

Artist Statement

You Matter confronts the systemic erasure of women’s autonomy and humanity, a stark response to the anti-abortion laws sweeping the country. This series was ignited by a question that cut deep: “Why does it matter to you? It’s not your matter.” Dismissed because I am past childbearing age, I realized how easily women’s voices are invalidated when they fall outside societal expectations. This question became the catalyst for my work.

Each piece in the series depicts women with bold red X's slashed across their faces, a visual metaphor for their dehumanization—marked as insignificant, as though they do not matter. The accompanying text, NOT YOUR MATTER, amplifies this dismissal, questioning why anyone should care.

But the narrative does not end here. Using augmented reality, the series transforms. When viewed through an AR app, the X's disappear, and the women come to life, sharing powerful stories of resilience, strength, and defiance. The text shifts from NOT YOUR MATTER to I MATTER, reclaiming their voice and humanity.

Inspired by Barbara Kruger’s Your Body is a Battleground, You Matter blends the immediacy of graphic art with the immersive potential of technology. It challenges the viewer to confront their biases and witness the strength and agency of women.

This series is a declaration that women’s voices, stories, and choices are vital, regardless of age, ability to conceive, or societal expectations. It’s a call to action to acknowledge and honor their worth in a world that so often seeks to silence them.
